Documenting Governor Kate Brown's horrific handling of the COVID pandemic in Oregon.
This week, while looking through a Facebook post on a group dedicated to getting Ice Queen Kate Brown to get our kids back in school, I came across this post by a distraught mother. No other introduction is needed.
I was going through Elisabeth's work she's been turning in. I ran across a survey she was asked to fill out. It's a little lengthy, but I think worth reading, especially from the perspective of a freshman. This broke my heart to read, it infuriated me. I will ALWAYS advocate for my children, but sometimes them expressing how they are feeling is the best way to show them how to advocate for themselves. I've seen her breakdown and cry because this has taken a toll on her. Talk about feeling helpless as a parent. I don't care about your politics and I will not discuss them, this is from the heart of a child and I feel she needed be to heard
The question:
"What is something that is working well in this class?"
Her answer...(in her words)
"Nothing! Nothing in any of my classes are working at all. It is a complete waste of time. How can I learn anything with a 2 hour school day four days a week?
We need to be in actual school learning. I've lost all my motivation to even go.
There is no excitement of picking out new clothes for the day, getting ready, or actual learning.
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of actual school in general. But I've never wanted to be back so badly.
And I know for a fact there are a ton of other kids who feel the same, but won't speak up about the way they feel.
Real school can be challenging, which we need.
Online school is stressful, difficult, not enough communication, and completely pointless. I NEED hands on learning to succeed. Being in an actual classroom is the best way to learn. It's helpful to hear other people's ideas and opinions about what we are learning.
If we're sitting behind a screen nobody will have any motivation to pay attention and focus.
Staring at a screen for 2 hours, plus homework, is really hurting my eyes which has caused headaches and makes me feel queasy.
I've been looking forward to high school for a while and I feel that it has been completely ruined and I don't know how the rest of my high school career will turn out, which is worrying.
I don't get how big stores that aren't super important can stay open but schools, which are way more important, haven't been opened.
It's been 118 or so days since I have been in an actual classroom.
Now, ask me again what's working??"
How anyone can read this without being heartbroken is beyond me; you would have to not have a soul to not want to do everything within your power to get kids back in school where they belong.
The problem is, unfortunately, that judging by responses, Kate Brown, Colt Gill, Patrick Allen, and Dean Sidelinger apparently have none; or, if they do, they are covered in thick ice that no amount of human compassion will ever break through.
