Documenting Governor Kate Brown's horrific handling of the COVID pandemic in Oregon.
From the Daily Dead Fish Wrapper:
The Sherwood Ice Arena has permanently closed its doors after two decades.
Here comes Kate and her jack boots from OSHA:
Owner Roy MacMillan said he was informed by the state on Dec. 17 that he would face $70,000 per day in fines if he didn’t close the ice rink immediately, according to an open letter MacMillan sent to state officials.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has required indoor entertainment centers, including ice risks, in counties labeled as “extreme risk” for COVID-19 spread to remain closed since mid-November. Washington County has been listed in the extreme risk category since that time.
MacMillan closed the ice rink and laid off 17 employees on Dec. 17 before announcing six days later on Facebook that the ice rink would close for good, unless “something drastic changes very soon.”
In a last-ditch effort to keep the ice rink from closing permanently, Sherwood City Council President Tim Rosener sent a letter to Brown’s office Monday requesting that the ice rink be allowed to reopen, according to a report by the Sherwood Gazette.
In the letter, Rosener attached 300 comments from community members expressing their support for reopening the ice rink. MacMillan asked customers and supporters of the rink to send their comments of support to Rosener in his Dec. 23 Facebook post.
“Please join us in making the state of Oregon more accountable with their decision making when it comes to small businesses trying to survive and providing an outlet to those who need it,” MacMillan wrote on Facebook.
In his open letter to state officials, MacMillan said that the ice rink had implemented stringent COVID-19 safety procedures to protect skaters and felt it could safely operate. He said the rink had also set up a contact tracing system and was unaware of any customers or employees contracting COVID-19.
Indoor entertainment and recreational facilities, including skating rinks and bowling alleys, have been fighting for their survival since the start of the pandemic.
Skating rinks and bowling alleys in higher risk “Phase 1″ counties were required to be closed from March until October, when the Oregon Health Authority announced new guidance allowing those businesses in Phase 1 counties to reopen. But Brown announced new coronavirus restriction framework in November, shutting down skating rinks and bowling alleys in “extreme risk” counties.
Oh, look here are more long-time Oregon business that she destroyed, taking jobs - and tax dollars, what matters to her the most - with them.
Wilsonville Lanes announced it was permanently closing in April, shortly after the first coronavirus shutdown. Kellogg Bowl in Milwaukie announced in December that it was closing after 58 years after the announcement of Brown’s new coronavirus restrictions forced it to shut its doors for a second time.
And the long term effects of this closure will resonate for years to come for ice skaters and hockey players.
The closure of the Sherwood Ice Arena will leave limited options for ice skaters and hockey players in the Portland metro area. There are three other year-round ice rinks in the metro area with the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton, the Lloyd Center Ice Rink in Portland and the Mountain View Ice Arena in Vancouver, Washington.
Add a few more deaths to the 900,000 deaths expected in th enext 15 years from pandemic unemployment
As usual, Kate and Pat just make these arbitrary decisions without backing up their decisions with any actual data. But, when your goal is not to help your citizens, but to "control" a virus and tell everyone else they can go to hell, these are the consequences for the little people.
